Well, that depends on how the code is rewritten.  If you learn a method
from a copyrighted work, you have no limits on how to use that method,
unless you copy part of the original work.

And yes, if you end up rewriting the original code as it was, you are
probebly infringing, but I think that's a very corner case, don't you
agree?
