You mean, by specifying the rhythm in both the music and the lyrics.

Yes, and it hopefully saves some key strokes in the input.

No, just do a \repeat fold with and empty repeat part and
the two text lines in two \alternative parts, see
input/star-spangled-banner.ly.

There's no right or wrong, but there are several possibilities.
I guess you mostly save some work using the addlyrics feature, 
though.
