How tosync lyrics

LilyPond supports two ways (correct me if...) to synchronize
lyrics with music notes.
 1) "Simply" via \simultaneous (<>) construct.
 2) Via \addlyrics construct.

Using \addlyrics guards for inconsistencies
and is in the spirit of saying things (the rhythm) only once.
But on the other hand 'repeats' with different lyrics
is problematic(?).

Can anyone please add insights or recommendations
on which is the 'right way' to do things.
