vcgencmd measure_temp

Shows core temperature of BCM2835 SoC.

temp=42.8’C

So I would assume the sensor is located in the BCM2835 chip/board (or equiv 
for a given model if RPi)

Yes, it's the CPU temperature.  You can even plot it with MRTG:
