I found this statement at http://www.elinux.org/RPI_vcgencmd_usage

vcgencmd measure_temp

Shows core temperature of BCM2835 SoC.

address@hidden:~# vcgencmd measure_temp
temp=42.8’C

So I would assume the sensor is located in the BCM2835 chip/board (or equiv for a given model if RPi)
