Be aware that the html pages are not the original source.  The tutorial 
is written in a markup language that is then converted to html, 
postscript and texi.  It's worth considering whether to write a french 
version in that language.

My own hunch is that something like DocBook would be the most useful.  I 
tried as recently as yesterday to build the documentation system, and 
failed.
