Is there any particular reason why  these file names start with a `.'?
They could well have been named =listing or anything else, isn't it ?

It looks like they could have been named anything. .listing is pretty common for filename lists, but it's surprising archive-version is a hidden file.

Still, that train has sailed. It's part of the archive format now, and changing it would break existing implementations.
