What I'd  like to have is  a human readable version  of changesets, as
you  mention,  but  completely  lossless,   with  a  tool  to  do  the
bidirectional translation.

Something like

tla show-changeset directory/ /* producing "file" */
tla build-changeset file      /* producing "directory/" */
