Yepp, set the 'backup' option to enable file backups and set backupcopy
to 'no'. The problem with this though is that it also breaks symlinks,
which is probably generally not desirable. I've posted a patch to
vim-dev to permit breaking of hard-links but not symlinks, hopefully it
will be accepted into vim once a few issues have been resolved.
