And after some searching, I found the problem.  I had gpm (mouse
handler) running, and it was also trying to use the serial port.  I
killed gpm and told the system not to restart it on reboot, and gnokii
suddenly works fine!

I can send and receive SMSes from the command line, so now the question
is just how best to access the phone...
