I committed a slightly modified version of your patch, in that
freetype 2.1 (on my system) really wants non-const versions of those
callback functions.

The new code is using an FT_CONST macro as you suggested in IRC,
based on FREETYPE_MAJOR and FREETYPE_MINOR. Let's hope we don't
have too many different versions of those callback typedefs ...

Tests welcome.
