This font seems to work fine for me; perhaps some of the recent bugfixes 
in fontconfig or Xft are needed.  I use:

        $ xfd -fa 'Standard Symbols L'

Xft, Xrender and fontconfig are now available in pre-packaged form at

        http://fontconfig.org/release
