A minor correction:

On a Solaris 2.x (x > 4 ?) box, with gcc 2.8 (or greater) and GNU ld:

you will get link errors: use --disable-nls.

If you need nls, the best bet is to use gcc with Sun's ld (/usr/ccs/bin/ld).
