The reason why we're not yet sure about it is the possible
incompatibility between the licenses.
I believe freefont is intended to be released under the GPL + the font
exception you refer to
(http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html#FontException), although I'm
having trouble finding any definitive statement about it. Steve, have
you seen info about this?
If that's the case, and assuming your software simply loads all fonts
equally (as opposed to being tweaked in your code to make use of
specific features in a specific font), the freefont license does not
need to be compatible with your software license(s). I.e., there would
be no problem distributing freefont with your LGPL'd software.
