Hmm,

now it is not locking up.  I will keep testing it, and let you know when 
something comes up.

If you do M-x toggle-debug-on-quit, and then M-x plan, you should be
able to quit the lock up with C-g. You will get a backtrace, which
will most likely indicate what is going wrong.
