Incidentally, I saw the problem ONCE today.
In a GNUS summary buffer, the blinking cursor behaved very strangely:
It was off for ~17 seconds, then on for 0.5 seconds, off for ~17 seconds,
on for 0.5, etc.
As soon as I touched a key, the cursor was back to normal blinking...
So the cursor did blink, just with very odd timing -- which indicates
that it was the timer system that had a problem ...
