    The problem was that configure was messed up locally (my fault) and
    failed to detect gettimeofday (or something related?).  It's a GNU
    system, so it has the function.

I didn't get that part.  Now it sounds like we have no evidence that
there is a real bug on any system.  We can forget about this unless
someone says it fails for real.
