    You have to enable the checkbox in order to edit the value.  Just like
    customize-face.

I tried doing that, first thing, and got confused anyway.

                     You cannot edit the key (the on-cursor), only the
    value (the off-cursor).

That was not obvious.  I tried editing the key and it failed, and it
never occurred to me to try the value.  The key and the value look
very similar.  (I am not using X.)

Can you think of a way to indicate that the value is editable?

    Nice concept, but both designing and implementing this is more work
    than I'm willing to offer.
