:-)So, it's a solution for some protocols, but only on some Emacs platforms.
The approach of using signals and in-band text for status reporting also makes me wonder about synchronization and spoofing issues, but like I indicated, I haven't looked into it closely, it may be fine.
Personally, I'm more interested in the GSSAPI and SASL possibilities. And it looks like that's where more work is needed, anyways. I just hope I find some time to *do* something about it... :-(
