Just to make sure: did you check that your patch works correctly when
Info-hide-note-references is nil, where `not' _should_ match `*Note'?
Personally, I have not had the time to follow this thread completely,
but at first view, nothing in this seem like a bug in any search
function to me. To me, it seems like an obvious bug in
Info-hide-note-references; it abuses the display property for editing
purposes.
