Lachlan,

Agreed.  It works under windows, it should be workable under linux. 
Cdrecord has all the different device information (the driver) built in
for all the supported drives.  I checked out some of the patches, and
they look just like driver information for specific drives.  I think
that we could help the cause if we could help with that type of device
information and in testing for dvdrtools.

I would personally also like to use the UDF format on my DVD-R disks as
well, as I'm not as dependant on the RockRidge extensions to ISO.  It
would make the disk better readable under more of my systems as well.
