On March 20, 2002, Microsoft organized a .NET day at the university of
Stuttgart. Participation was open to everybody and nothing had to be signed.
Damien Watkins, not a Microsoft employee but one of the speakers, mentioned
that MS will make available a BSD version of the CLR, code-named Rotor, in
Summer 2002, and that access to its source code would be granted under a
shared source license. He also made it clear that he was not speaking for
Microsoft.
You can get independent confirmation from Google with the search for "+BSD
+.NET +Shared +Source". Some of the links popping up are:
http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/a/dotnet/2001/06/27/dotnet.html
http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/a/dotnet/2002/03/04/rotor.html
http://www.zdnetindia.com/techzone/resources/webservices/stories/28400.html
I don't think it's necessary to remind people that they must not look at
these sources if they want to participate in DotGNU.
