GNUstep.sh with graphical login

I have beating my head against the wall for a week and I cannot get
GNUstep.sh to run so that I can use GNUstep apps from WindowMaker. If
I open a terminal and
run . /usr/GNUstep/System/Library/Makefiles/GNUstep.sh then I can run
GNUstep apps from that terminal but as soon as I close it I cannot.

I have tried:
1 symlinking /usr/GNUstep/System/Library/Makefiles/GNUstep.sh
to /etc/profile.d/GNUstep.sh 2
symlinking /usr/GNUstep/System/Library/Makefiles/GNUstep.sh
to /etc/X11/Xsession.d/70GNUstep.sh 3
Placing . /usr/GNUstep/System/Library/Makefiles/GNUstep.sh in my
~/.xsessionrc 4
Placing /usr/GNUstep/System/Library/Makefiles/GNUstep.sh in my
~/.xsessionrc 5
Placing /usr/GNUstep/System/Library/Makefiles/GSXboot.sh in my
~/.xsessionrc 6
Placing . /usr/GNUstep/System/Library/Makefiles/GNUstep.sh in my
~/.xinitrc 7 Placing /usr/GNUstep/System/Library/Makefiles/GNUstep.sh
in my ~/.xinitrc 8
Placing /usr/GNUstep/System/Library/Makefiles/GSXboot.sh in my
~/.xinitrc 9 making my ~/.xsessionrc executable 10 making my
~/.xsessionrc not executable 11 making my ~/.xinitrc executable 12
making my ~/.xinitrc not executable 13
Placing . /usr/GNUstep/System/Library/Makefiles/GNUstep.sh in my
WindowMaker autostart 14
Placing /usr/GNUstep/System/Library/Makefiles/GNUstep.sh in my
WindowMaker autostart 15
Placing /usr/GNUstep/System/Library/Makefiles/GSXBoot.sh in my
WindowMaker autostart

If I use startx from the cli
with . /usr/GNUstep/System/Library/Makefiles/GNUstep.sh in my
~/.xsessionrc everything works

If I use xinit from the cli
with . /usr/GNUstep/System/Library/Makefiles/GNUstep.sh in my
~/.xinitrc everything works

I have tried GDM, XDM and WDM, I really want to use WDM, I really do
not want to have to log in from the command line.

I know this is possible becasue if I install the (rather old) .debs
from Ubuntu's repositories then I can run the apps. I have even set up
another computer with GNUstep from the Repos to see if I could figure
out how they are doing it but after more than 100 hours of beating my
head against this wall I just cannot figure this out.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. -j
