Maybye it is time to start Configure.app :)How does that benefit the end user? It makes it more complicated...see belowI never liked Configure.app and I think Apple is on the right track with just having Preferences.app where some panes need the admin password to apply changes. Maybe they could be grouped by user and computer settings? Maybe using a TabView? DirkYes, I think this is a much better plan and think Apple *does* in fact have it right in this instance. Mac users know that you go to the preferences app to change settings. Making people wonder where they need to go is bad design. ("Gee, is it in Configure.app or Preferences.app? I'll have to go look in both..") IMHO this would only add needless confusion.
There is a difference: Configure.app is hardware/system related, Preferences.app is user related, it is about user's preferences for applications. It is also in the name of applications: Preferences.app - what user preferes, what behaviour, what look ... actually this application is not needed at all, if all users want to use default look/behaviour of apps. Preferences.app is for optional customisation of the system to make it more comfortable. On the other hand is the Configure.app - configuration of the system, the name says it all. This application is needed to make (configure) the system work properely. Usualy, there is only one configuration (system setup) of the system for all users, but there should be more different preferences (tastes) of different users on the same system. Configure.app - for system/workstation configuration or setup Preferences.app - for the user preferences about the environment or applications Stefan
