We've seen this problem or something very similar to it in the past.
Mostly we've seen the problem on Debian systems. What's your hardware
and software platform?

You guess it:
$ gcc --version
gcc (GCC) 3.3.6 (Debian 1:3.3.6-6)
Silly me. should have checked...
g++ 3.2 and 3.4 and later are known to work.
g++ 3.4 did it.
Now I'm looking at the examples.
