Hi,
when one appends ('r') files to an archive, GNU tar 1.14 does not
recognize the type of the original archive but appends GNU tar format
headers. Thus if the original archive is a POSIX archive, the appended
part is not in POSIX format. The resulting archive is inconsistent and
some implementations (e. g. star, my cpio/pax) rightfully refuse to
read the appended part.
