I've just found out that the \header block is handled similar to a
separate system, not actually connected to the staff directly below.
It took me a loooong time to discover that!
My problem was that I always got a big vertical space between the
header and the full score (consisting of a single system with many
staves), and I wasn't able to get rid of it. Finally, I tried
ragged-bottom = ##t
which solved the problem -- lilypond no longer tried to distribute the
available vertical space between header and the system.
Graham, please document this prominently!
The `annotate-spacing' property was quite helpful while analyzing this
issue. Interestingly, the output shows property names which are
rather poorly documented, for example `next-padding'. In
lilypond.info it is mentioned only in an example, without further
explanation. In lilypond-internals.info it is completely missing.
The same for `page-top-space' which has an index entry in
lilypond.info and nothing else.
