You haven't missed much :o)
I've never installed Grub to any MBR intentionally, and when done by accident, always replaced it with standard MBR code...
Now that you explain your reasons I must admit it seems like a good idea. And I never thought of it :o( Just for clarity could you tell us exactly how you replace the mbr?
