Bug in xgettext

I´m trying to extract the strings from a .cpp-file
written with german MSVC. There are german symbols
in it, so xgettext complains about
"non-ASCII"-characters.However, when I
use --from-code=iso-8859-1, xgettext stops with
"abnormal program termination"
Id this my fault or a bug in xgettext.
Also, how can I see which encoding is used by a
certain textfile.
