sure I would be willing, though I don't know how much I will be
able to accomplish.

It seems that GNU/Linux distributions have been shipping the
pretest versions for a long time already (e.g., Red Hat since
7.1, it seems). If there are subtle bugs, then lots of people
are using subtly-buggy versions without even knowing it; this
is not a good thing. :-(
