configured using `configure  i386-debian-linux-gnu --prefix=/usr 
--sharedstatedir=/var/lib --libexecdir=/usr/lib --localstatedir=/var/lib 
--infodir=/usr/share/info --with-pop=yes --with-x=yes --with-x-toolkit=yes'

Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:

Attempt to load existing file with M-x "find-file"
  /anonymous@babbage.sissa.it:/cond-mat/papers/0102/0102435.abs
fails.
The created buffer has the message:

  /anonymous@babbage.sissa.it:/cond-mat/papers/0102/0102435.abs:
  total 0

Function (file-directory-p 
"/anonymous@babbage.sissa.it:/cond-mat/papers/0102/0102435.abs")
returns t although this is a text file.
