Don't push too much on msgfmt's checks. There are three perfect solutions
that work fine with the current tools:

1) see fileutils:

char* version_etc_copyright =
  /* Do *not* mark this string for translation. */
  "Copyright (C) 2002 Free Software Foundation, Inc.";

2) Add a translator comment.

   /* TRANSLATORS: The word 'Copyright' must stay untranslated. */
   fputs (_("Copyright ..."))

3) Use a %s.

   /* TRANSLATORS: %s gets replaced by the word "Copyright". */
   printf (_("(C) %s 2002 ..."), "Copyright");
