Hello Michael,
First I'd like to suggest a change in stable/unstable stuff.
0.2 is _way_ old and I think we should now do our best to
fix any outstanding bugs while freezing 0.3.1 .
Outstanding serious bugs are mainly some segfaults I get every
once in a while and the unindent bug.
I agree. I'll try to nail the unindent bug. But, while I was working
on it, I noticed that unindenting doesn't seem to work at all. Did you
disable it or something?
What about changes in CVS structure, like beaver/beaver-devel ?
Would make it easier to freeze a certain codebase and just commit
fixes while adding new stuff to the other branch.
Eh... Maybe. I'm not too experienced with dealing with two codebases,
so I'm not sure what the best way to do it is. It would be nice to
continue to have a testing branch where we can try new code with little
responsibility for it.
So, there is an in-CVS way to tag or split branches or something, right?
I'd be cool with some kind of split.
Second thing: a roadmap. Should make it easier to coordinate
and concentrate on important things. What do you consider
most important for ongoing unstable development?
Um... I'd like to get a more customizable toolbar, better
search/replace stuff (like find next). The command stuff I talk about
below... A function list (for only certain languages, I guess).
Support for the Recent Files specification. Drag and drop to/from the
Beaver window.
As for planning when this happens, for the next version, I'd like to see
the stability we plan. I'm cool if we make the next version just
stability and maybe your new preference stuff. Those two are top on my
list. (You know, this might be a good opportunity to adopt a
kernel-style numbering scheme. Odd numbers for development, even for
stable.)
As for the next unstable branch, I'm down with nailing customizable
toolbar, search/replace, and recent file stuff first. That's all
relatively easy and good stuff to have. Further down that branch, I'd
like to get a function list and drag and drop working.
Already on my agenda is the Preferences window; and with it
many new adjustable things. I make good progress with excellent
HIG compatibility in mind.
Cool. Preferences would be nice to see revised.
I'd also like to see CVS information and a CVS/Tools->CVS menu,
but I can't think of anything sensible except commit and update.
But then again I'm not a CVS master, just a user.
I think a lot of what we want can be achieved by a generic 'command'
system. I had one request where the person wanted a button to publish
his HTML pages onto his webspace. Some people will want to run 'make,'
others will want to use CVS. I think if we can create an interface
where the person can enter in some string, and we create a button for
it, that would be awesome.
