Hmm. Yes, that's probably latest stable. There was a major regression in 1.7.0 
that recently got fixed, and then this little build hiccup that I'm working on 
fixing.

Understood. AVR GCC 4.4.3 seems stable so far. But, depending on your 
benchmarks you may, or may not, want to stick with 3.4.6, also depending on 
your criteria.

I wouldn't say that development of avr-gcc is dead. It is the usual culprit: 
never enough people to test and fix. Hopefully that should be fixed soon-ish, 
but I'm always hesitant to promise anything.
