Hello Ralf,

I didn't want to download a pre-compiled Emacs / AUCTeX package because I
have other Emacs packages installed and didn't want to re-install them. I
finally got through the process after over two days of work, I must be
slow! It was hard to get a working recent version of MiKTeX (2.6) since it
was impossible to connect to any repository when running "setup.exe" and
the same problem occured if I dowloaded the minimal package, which
installed fine, but when it was trying to connect to a package repository
to get missing packages the same error occured, probably due to firewalls
on which I have no control (large company with large security measures!).
I ended up downloading the full package repository from CTAN and gave the
path where it was downloaded to the MikTeX package manager, from there on I
could run MiKTeX OK.

Then I moved on to set up AUCTEX (11.84) which went OK as well, it solved
most of the problems I reported when I first posted BUT I have a hard time
to get it to use YAP rather than GSView as a pre-viewer, anyone knows how
to do that? And how can I configure the "Other" option in the "Command"
tab so it runs "ps2pdf"?

Thanks for your support,

MiKTeX 2.4 was discontinued, see <URL:http://miktex.org/2.4/>. You
will likely have better luck after upgrading to a recent MiKTeX
version.

You can download a precompiled Emacs/AUCTeX bundle from the AUCTeX web
site if you want to spare yourself the hassle of compiling and
installing AUCTeX.
