Freeware is proprietary software,

Even if the copyright holders have their own idea about freeware,
they clarify it in "the following conditions," which don't allow
selling software.

No, the solution isn't simple. You didn't care enough not to allow
proprietary software in your package, you didn't care to remove it
when submitting your package, you didn't care to look for it when
you were told your package contains it, you didn't care to check its
distribution terms against the free software definition when it was
pointed at. You are not likely to maintain the proper licensing
status of your package when nobody reminds you about it.
