I thought that some smart query is being made to determine which
mirror is best? I don't remember, really, and most probably such a
query will result in a slower download compared to a regular one even
from a very slow mirror...

I don't understand what that means, but nevermind.

I tried with http too before sending my previous message. It should
work with both protocols, as ftp.gnu.org works.

Yes, it works that way, but that's again incompatible. Also, from my
location it is much slower than the master.
