As maintainer of the JNPatch, I'm obviously a little biased, but I'll say
this again: If we want to have some of the more experimental features as
compile-time options in a different branch, I would be willing to maintain
it.  If you take a look at http://www.neuheisel.us/ratpoison/patches/ you'll
see how long I've been maintaining the patch, and the Xft parts are very
stable.  I'll continue to maintain it as long as people find it useful, but
it would be easier for other hackers to try out patches against it if it
were in a CVS branch.

<slight troll warning>
Remember, adding library dependencies as compile time options does not add
dependencies to the final executable by default.  Moreover, a library
dependency for something you want (e.g., xft) is not a Bad Thing.  Adding
dependecies for flatbed scanner tools and wireless sniffing libraries to
your window manager is...
