Here's my two cents:
IMO, no player will get the development base that xmms has.  Writing a
module for xmms to not use X seems a better solution politically,
since you'll then be able to use all the other xmms modules
automatically.  O'course, I've never looked at the xmms code and I
don't know how hard it would be.
