Sure.  I have about 10 different pspp/psppire instances on my machine.   Just 
configure with a line something like
this: 
        /path/to/pspp/source/configure --prefix=`mktemp -d -p $HOME` 
then run 
        make
        make install 
as normal.

I find it useful to keep the source, and install directories separate.  so I 
have  my source trees in $HOME, my 
build trees and my install trees in a directory called /Scratch/
     
     To make effective test, the images must be used directly in *.svg format, 
and I think should make changes 
     to Smake and other files.

I don't understand why, but I'm sure you have looked at it in greater detail 
than I have.
