I see what SPSS did as a bug and not a feature.  It should have renamed
the original variables.

Interesting.  Perhaps SPSS does maintain separate long and short names.
I'm not too happy about the idea of maintaining separate names--it makes
the code complex and ugly.

We will have to do some testing.
