My investigation showed that this was only because I expressed it
as
        do './generate.pl';
Changing it to
        do 'generate.pl';
fixed the problem.  Because I like it my way better, I checked in
a change back, after making sure that `make distcheck' and a
build from a separate dir succeeded.
