I agree. Driving the 5V bus from multiple sources is a recipe for releasing the magic smoke. The 5V line on the serial cable is there to provide power to telemetry modems, but should not be used with FTDI boards (as they draw their power from the computer).

I have used 5V FTDI cables and they do work. But it's right on the edge. I imagine a little power spike would be all it takes to burn out the LPC's serial ports. A lot of the FTDI board setups that I have seen give the option (via a bridge) to do either 3.3V or 5V. You may want to see if yours can do the same.

Hello Adrian,

1) Did you supply the Tiny in the same time ? (with a battery or external power supply ?) If yes, *do not connect* the orange 5V PPZ cable to the RED 5V cable on the FTDI (Tiny and netbook USB 5V conflict) 2) *PPZ TX* line (SERIAL header pin #8, "*Blue*") must be connected on *FTDI RX* line (*Yellow*) 3) *PPZ RX* line (SERIAL header pin #7, "*Green*") must be connected on *FTDI TX* line (*Orange*) 4) A 5V FTDI cable is not a good choice. LPC's digital inputs supposed to be 5V tolerant, but....

    Hello all,

My Tiny 2.11 is working beautifully, and my airframe files are
configured - servos are moving, and I'm almost ready to get into
the air - following some additional tuning. I do have a question
about using the serial interface. I have an FTDI TTL-T232R-5.0V
cable that I was using with an Arduino setup. I purchased the Tiny
from Chebuzz, and am using the 4-wire header for serial
communications. I have tried: PPZ Black ground cable to the black
ground cable on FTDI, the Orange 5V PPZ cable to the RED 5V cable
on the FTDI, the Blue PPZ TX line to the Orange FTDI line, and the
Green PPZ RX line to the Yellow FTDI line. As soon as I plug the
USB portion into my netbook, the computer shuts off instantly,
seemingly to protect itself from a short. PPZ continues to boot
properly (so far). What am I doing wrong? I have seen others use a
3V3 cable, but the Chebuzz serial hookup does not presently have a
3.3V line, unless I add it. What should I do? I'd mess around
until it worked, but I really don't want to destroy the board. Thanks,
    -Adrian
