I agree.  Driving the 5V bus from multiple sources is a recipe for 
releasing the magic smoke.  The 5V line on the serial cable is there to 
provide power to telemetry modems, but should not be used with FTDI 
boards (as they draw their power from the computer).

I have used 5V FTDI cables and they do work.  But it's right on the 
edge.  I imagine a little power spike would be all it takes to burn out 
the LPC's serial ports.  A lot of the FTDI board setups that I have seen 
give the option (via a bridge) to do either 3.3V or 5V.  You may want to 
see if yours can do the same.
