The LEDs are not affected by the USB/driver. Do you get a new
/dev/ttyUSBx if you connect the modem?

Maybe copying the file $PAPARAZZI_HOME/conf/system/modprobe.d/paparazzi
to /etc/udev/modprobe.d/ helps as the raw ftdi driver might not know
the (proprietary) device ID of the Maxstream box.
