Don't plug the +5v  from Tiny on the FTDI cable : you just need to connect GND, TX and RX.

What connections do I need from the Tiny Serial port to the USB to serial adapter to try the serial protocol?

1 of them is an ADXRS150 or 300 Im not sure.  The other is a small PCB with a mini USB connector on it to program the AP.  If you blow up the picture full scale(it gets sized by my browser anyways) you can see the difference between the 2.
