Retard the timing, it will improve efficiency (reduce heat) at the expense of lower maximum power.

Hi Mattew,
The drop of last while flying is quite small. Don't count on that. There have
been some articles in german magazine which measured only a couple of % using
data loggers. Also you want to put the engine full throttle during the launch
phase, don't you ?
Is there anything braking the engine ? Are the cables too close from the
rotating part, or something of the kind ?
