Some more detail obtained using -t option to cvs.

$ cvs -t login
  -> parse_cvsroot ( :pserver:address@hidden:/cvs/gnome )
  -> main loop with CVSROOT=:pserver:address@hidden:/cvs/gnome
Logging in to :pserver:address@hidden:2401/cvs/gnome
CVS password:
  -> Connecting to anoncvs.gnome.org(209.132.176.176):2401.
$
