[Nss-mysql-users] Proftpd not authenticating nss-mysql users

I have nss-mysql .43, mysql 3.23.49, and proftpd 1.2.6.  All are
installed on a new testing server.  I have shadow support enabled for
nss-mysql.  For the puposes of testing I have created two accounts, one
named mcola in the shadow file and the other named mark I the nss-mysql
database.  I am using the sample database that comes with nss-mysql.  I
can ssh to the server using both the mcola and mark account.  I can ftp
to the server using the mcola account only.  I have PAM authentication
support installed with the proftpd installation.  Here is an excerpt
from my logs.  It ilustrates the successful logins for mcola for both
ssh and proftpd, and the successful login for mark with ssh but the
unsuccessful login for mark with proftpd:

Why is it that I get a "no such user" when attempting to login via ftp
with an nss-mysql account?
