This is not a bug. The gid parameter must either be a number, or the name of
a group. (not a user)
However, since I try not to be a prick, if you download the latest CVS
version, I have added the feature you need. Simply use the following gid
setting with the CVS version (HEAD):
gid !%U
The ! means to look in the password file instead of the group file.

Summary: gid support in internal auth method
Original Submission: I have found a problem in the latest release. I would
like support local users, authenticating with the internal method and
mapping uid/gid from the system passwd. Seems like mapping uid works fine,
but gid set here to 'nobody' all the time.
