Yes, I think you don't need to do this by hand. I'm using "django-admin 
makemessages -a" before compilemessages. And Thomas suggested poedit, 
which I don't know.

If you noticed problems with maposmatic.org this morning, it was my 
fault (I'll tell you more about the changes I made later); it should be 
stable by now.
