Emanuele Giaquinta was concerned that someone would be bit by one or more of the bugs in ncurses 5.4 (specificly handling of wide-characters in ncursesw), and at first proposed that lynx not build with versions before 5.5, and we compromised on allowing someone to build lynx using ncursesw but disabling the wide-character support. The configure script defaults to the same behavior as before...
